Maker of the Month: Kapka Enamel

We can’t deny that something magical happens when people are gathered around a table overflowing with delicious food, drinks, and conversation (especially after so many of us have had to keep our loved ones at a distance over the past year).

Our Maker of the Month for April was formed by three friends, Saime, Sibel and Bilge, who were each inspired by the feeling of lively conversation had while lingering over a meal. Kapka’s enamel tableware is vibrant and enduring, and we think you’ll love getting to know more about the women behind these beautiful products!

Kapka emerged because you all longed for the same things, namely the crowded and colorful tables of your childhoods. How did you all meet, and what inspired you to create Kapka?

What brought us together is a special place on the Mediterranean! Saime and Sibel met 22 years ago when they moved into neighboring beach houses there. Ten years later, Bilge started dating a neighborhood friend and we bonded quickly.

One afternoon in an Istanbul coffee shop, Bilge told us about her dream of creating a brand like Kapka, and we jumped right in! We all love long chats over dinner tables (or lunch tables that extend to dinner!), and Kapka was shaped by those chats and feelings.

What are the merits and unique qualities of enamel as a material?

Enamelware has so many diverse qualities that everyone likely has their own pick!

Saime is super health-conscious, so her pick would likely be that the materials we use are all organic and the glass coating on the products makes them healthy to use.

Bilge is all about sustainability and loves the fact that these pieces last for a very long time. She also loves antiques and the vintage look our products acquire—the wear and tear appeals to her.

Sibel, a mother of two, probably picks the practical side of things. Enamelware does not break, can be used outdoors, is easily cleaned, is dishwasher-safe, can be heated, refrigerated…you name it.

All of your pieces are handmade in Turkey using traditional methods. Can you share more about the techniques and processes used to create your enamelware?

We never guessed how cumbersome this would be when we first started! It is quite a long process to produce each one of these pieces. First, the steel sheet that forms the base is molded into its shape. Then, the pieces are individually dipped into the first layer of coating and heated up. Each color is applied individually and the product is heated—this repeats a few times with time for cooling and drying included in between.

The artisans at the workshops use different techniques to paint the products. Sometimes they splatter the paint, other times they spin the plate while injecting paint. We must experiment a lot to get to the final product and it also takes a lot of practice to consistently produce similar pieces, but this makes each item absolutely unique.

You have so many different collections (two of which we carry here at Favor), and all of them are vibrant with a contemporary spin. Where do you find inspiration for the designs and colors that adorn each collection?

The colors and vibrancy are absolutely key elements for us. There is no recipe for this, but let’s just say we spend a large amount of time looking at beautiful things for inspiration—art, design, architecture, nature and other things.

What are your favorite dishes to serve on these plates, bowls, and serving trays?

Our favorite would be a combination of different meze (or appetizers)…the vibrancy of our pieces really adds a lot when serving a large number of small dishes Mediterranean-style. But some of the chefs who use our plates create wonders with more complex dishes as well. You must check our Instagram account, @kapkaenamel, for inspiration!
