Our FAVORite Cocktail: October 2021

It’s officially ~spooky szn~, but one member of our FAVOR team has been celebrating since August! Alice’s affinity for all things Halloween shows up in her home décor, her eyeshadow choices, and even her phone case. She’s the perfect person to share cocktail inspiration for your spooky celebrations this month!

To kick off our monthly FAVORite drink, we really wanted to do something in the tiki realm. My partner and I have been working on building a home tiki bar from scratch since April of this year! It’s been a fun way to learn a new hobby together, and the process allows me to flex my creative muscles. The cool thing about researching and designing a home tiki bar was seeing how everyone makes it totally their own. We are the subset that sprinkled in a little kitschy with a dash of horror in our décor. I've always been a fan of tiki drinks and a great craft cocktail in general! I'm also currently obsessed with the Rialto Coupe glasses we carry, so I was hoping to find a way to use them.

Which brings me to our FAVORite cocktail of the month. Drumroll, please...The Undead Gentleman! It has everything: a delightful tiki drink served in a coupe glass, and the added bonus of a fun name that fits right into the month of all things spooky. It also features Cinnamon Syrup, which is one of my favorite flavors in drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. This drink definitely packs a little bit of a pucker with the lime and grapefruit, but overall, it has a nice balance of flavors, in my opinion. We hope you enjoy it. Happy Spooktiki Halloween!

The Undead Gentleman

1 Dash Absinthe Blanc

1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice

1/2 oz Cinnamon Syrup*

1/2 oz Falernum

1 oz Black Blended Overproof Rum (We used Plantation O.F.T.D)

1 1/2 oz Blended Aged Rum (We used Flor de Caña's 12 year)

1 Dash Angostura Bitters

  1. Rinse a chilled cocktail coupe glass with absinthe blanc.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker with cracked or cubed ice.
  3. Shake and double-strain into the coupe.

Bonus Recipe:

*Cinnamon Simple Syrup: As the name suggests, it's simple to make! It's also great to use in your iced coffee, if you're into that sorta thing. {Hi, me.} A little cinnamon syrup and a splash of Soy or Oat milk in your cold brew...YUM!

You’ll need:

1 cup Water

2 Cinnamon Sticks

2 Cups Granulated Sugar

  1. Put water and cinnamon in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Add the sugar and stir with a whisk until dissolved, about 1 minute.
  3. Immediately remove from heat. Cover and let sit at room temperature overnight {or if you make it in the morning, let it sit so it's ready when you come home from work!}.
  4. Finnel into a lidded bottle or other sealable container.
  5. Keep refrigerated. The syrup will keep for several weeks.

**For this Undead Gentleman, I used a Falernum made by Jacksonville local tiki craftsman, the Luau Lads. It's starting to be carried around the states, so check to see if it's available in your area! The typical Falernum used is John D. Taylor's Velvet Falernum, which is sold at most liquor stores.
